Thanks for a Great SolNal Party!

About 75 people gathered at the New Cumberland Library’s Foundation Hall on Saturday, February 13 to celebrate SolNal. The weather behaved and we had a lovely afternoon eating, chatting, playing games, and watching performers. A special thanks to emcee and talent show coordinator Michael Stanley and to food coordinator Connie Wonder for pulling the day’s activities together. We had a number of international students from the University of Scranton join us as well as the talented drumming group Sela Hart. We also enjoyed several individual instrumental performances.

We would like to thank some of main cooks, including:  Young Pak, Puyoung Blumanstock, Myong Kenyon, Jung Hei Horowitz, Soo Hee Embrey, Yong Ui Lee as well as Shawn March, who donated the drinks.

Bilingual Translator/Writer Sought

Local resident Bok Nam Jin Davis is working on recording his life story, which begins in Hiroshima not long before the dropping of the atomic bomb. His parents died while he was still a child and Davis moved to Korea to live with grandparents. Upon their death, Davis spent the rest of his childhood in an orphanage, sponsored by a Sunday School class from New Cumberland. After college, Davis came to the U.S. for graduate study and to meet the Sunday School teacher who had supported him. His teacher’s brother and family adopted him as an adult. Ties to central PA established, Davis returned to the area after earning a master’s in social work and worked over thirty years for the Department of Welfare. He also helped start the first Korean-American church in the area.

Davis has some of his story already written in Korean and is looking for a translator, as well as someone with writing skills to help him record the rest. Hopefully this small taste is enough to inspire someone to join in this memoir experience. If interested, contact Davis directly at (717) 214-7684 or bokdavis@comcast.net.
